Uncover Big Bass
By David Giudice aka BassHunter69

How often do fishermen or fisherwomen come across major heavy cover as they fish? The answer is all too often. One of the BIGGEST secrets to catching that big Bass Daddyo is to fish in that heavy cover you know most weekend anglers will skip. Now your thinking this guys a little crazy. I’m gonna get hung up and lose every lure I’ve got. Well let me tell you this; if you’re not getting hung up now, then you’re not fishing where the BIG BASS are.

First and foremost you will start with the gear your using to fish with. You’re going to need a med/heavy pole at least 7 foot minimum, with a decent bait casting reel. Why as bait casting reel you ask? Well a bait caster is perfect for pitching and flipping, and you can use it as a wrench to pull those bass out of heavy weed cover and what not. Next you’re going to want a good braided line. I personally like to use ugly braid 50 lb test or spider wire stealth 80 lb test. In my experience those two lines cut right through heavy weed cover like a hot knife through butter. Also, its less inclined to break as your wrenching that Big Lunker out of those weeds he was hiding under.

Now let me tell you about the lure. I know a whole lot about these wrecking balls. What you’re going to need are those big heavy 1oz jigs. Yes, you heard me right 1oz jigs. Personally I like the black and blue jig, as well as white, and the chartreuse colors, also the blacking red which simulated bleeding colors. Next you need to dress this jig up with a nice trailer. There are so many to choose from that include scent and taste technology, so please don’t be afraid to experiment with trailers.

Now you just pitch or flip these jigs right into that dense cover such as lily pads, grass patches etc.. That jig is going to punch right through that heavy cover which most other jigs won’t which is the idea. Most strikes tend to happen as the jig falls so watch your line, if no strike occurs then your baits going to slam right into that sand or silt on the bottom and your going to attract that bass's attention with that cloud of silt and what not that’s flying around. Now what you need to do is let that jig sit a bit. The water itself will make the jigs skirt and trailer move. If a bass hasn’t picked the jig up within 3 to 5 minutes, give it a little hop or skip, and repeat the process right up to the boat hop, swim or skip and wait it out. You will need patience with this technique, but I assure you it works. Give it a try on your next fishing trip and let me know the results. I'd love to hear from you and how my tips have worked out.
